Keeping Busy

I've been keeping busy working on video productions as a still photographer. Over last two months I've worked with two production crews. The first film was Santa ana winds and a few of the images can be seen here. The other film was Shadowman and you can see a few of the images here. Both productions were really good and fun to work on at times. Something that I didn't know is how much down time there can be when working with film crews. At times the scene has to be repeated over and over until the director is satisfied and then they have to get different angles for the same scene. For a set photographer you can only get so many images of the same scene. Overall, it was exciting to be a part of the teams that make these films happen. Another good thing is the amount of people you can meet when working with these crews. I meet a lot of cool people over the last month and I hope tp keep in touch and work with many of them again.

Yet to come

I've been in the process of reviewing my past process, work and interactions in relation to my photography. I know that the only way for me to continue to develop as a photographer is for me to evaluate my past shoots, figure outwhat I like and didn't like about the shoot, re-work what I didn't like and shoot my next series using my new found corrections or changes. This is part of the reason that I have been away from the blog for a minute. Apparantly, I'm never satisfied with my work so, I'm constantly researching and looking for ways to take it to the next level.
I have a few new process and ideas that i'll be trying out during my next few shoots, so stay tuned for what's yet to come.

Oh yeah, I've added a few ew images to portfolio one.

ARTinTune Event - Allan Tannenbaum photos

This past saturday I photographed the reception for "Bright Lights Big City" a show that featured the works of Allan Tannenbaum. Allan was a photo editor for the SoHo Weekly news in the 70's. He photographed everything from night life to current events. This show was hosted by Artintune, an organization that feature photographic works that relate to the music scene. So, naturally the show was about his night life, club scene and musucian archive.

This was the first event that Rosalind and Carla organized and there was an amazing turnout. There were two live bands an open bar and the whos who of L.A, and hollywood.

"Allan Tannenbaum's photographs capture the glitz as well as the scum of the era. As photo editor of SoHo Weekly News, he covered the club scene and much more, and the book should satisfy your curiosity about what went on in those VIP lounges at the Mudd Club and Studio 54. John Lennon, Mick, Bianca, Debbie and Chris, the Ramones, Mayor Koch, Patti Smith, Kurt Russell (huh?) all show up."
Here are a few images from the show.

Adapt or Die

This past Sunday the team three models went to Palmdale to produce "Adapt or Die". The premise behind this photo shoot was to create an editorial style fashion spread that spoke on the current issues of today. Many of us are feeling the effects of the current "recession or reset". When you become personally affected by various road blocks in life you have to adapt, reinvent and keep moving forward. If you keep doing the same thing that got you in your current situation and neglect to react to the obstacles in your life, the outcome will be death. I'm metaphorically speaking of death in the terms of loss of spirit, drive, ambition, motivation and dreams.

Venus Leone & the ipod debate

Thanks to Tanesha, Yadira and my ipod for helping this shoot run so smoothly. Without them I wouldn't have been able to produce the quality of images that came out of this shoot. This time I tried something that I've always wanted to do but never got around to, which is wearing my ipod during a shot. I had the ipod on the entire shoot and I actually liked the results. This may sound selfish but I actually like the fact that I can tune everything out and be in my own world while shooting. This is the closest thing to the meditative qualities of being in the studio with a product. When I'm shooting products it's just me, the product, my music and nothing else exist. When I'm in this state, I can focus on the task at hand, gather my thoughts on the fly and focus on every aspect of my art, my equipment and my visions.

I had a debate with Venus about this and she thinks that I shouldn't tune everyone out because she may have questions, etc.... But my rebuttal is that, if I'm instructing the model on what I want; there shouldn't be any questions, especially if I constantly suggest different movements, etc... after every few frames. Questions and suggestions usually throw my thought process off and I get side tracked. I will admit that I can miss out on some good ideas, so I guess in the future I'll try to compromise by having the model raise their hand or send me a text message, just kidding.

If you are reading this and have a suggestion or comment about this, feel free to post a comment, I have open eyes and ears.
Do you think should wear the ipod?
Or, keep it off?
Here are the images from the shoot, so you be the judge. Venus

Virtual Tear Sheet

On this past Sunday, I took pictures of my new friend Tiaira. She is not a model, just a beautiful girl that I knew I had to photograph the first time I looked at her. This gave me the opportunity to practice my on the spot coaching and creative thought process. My goal was to create visually interesting images that emphasized her beauty and features. Turns out, that Tiaira is more of a model than she or I expected. She has a natural connection with the camera that is undeniable. Even though she made me promise not to make her nervous, she was more comfortable in front of the camera than I was behind it. During the post production of these images the layout turned into an editorial spread that includes actual notes from my personal journal. The layout was staged to mimic what you would see in an actual magazine; from the text layout down to the color shift that can occur when you print a two page spread from a single image.

First things first. I had to become a stylist, which I wasn't expecting to do but something good came from this: I discovered that I'm not a stylist. She was expecting a friend to help her with this but things happen and life goes on...

The first stop was at a park type area, then we went down town for the second set of images. We got off to a slow start at the park but things picked up and we got into the groove once we made it downtown. We produced a good collection of images in both places but I came to realize that i'm most inspired by urban settings.

Here are a few outtake shots, the entire spread can be seen on my website.

Angel Dust (the drug series)

Well actually this photo series started out as an attempt to visualize the side effects of the drug PCP, street name "angel dust". Here's a brief run down of the effect of the drug.
Wikipedia
"Psychological effects include severe changes in body image, loss of ego boundaries, and depersonalization. Hallucinations and euphoria are reported infrequently. The drug has been known to alter mood states in an unpredictable fashion, causing some individuals to become detached, and others to become animated. Intoxicated individuals may act in an unpredictable fashion, driven by their delusions and hallucinations."
My goal was to create images that displayed my interpretation of the side effects of the drug; mainly hallucinations and euphoria. During editing and the process of arranging the images for display, the entire series evolved. Instead of just being about the side effects of the drug, it became a documentation of the alternative "during" effects of the drug (a good trip or a bad trip). The visuals and arrangement are my interpretation of the journey the the user takes before coming back to reality.

Here are the links to see the actual images:

Sara Bovi - The Vegas Invasion (pics inside)

This past Thursday (March 19th), I had a scheduled photo shoot with my new friend Sara Bovi. Like me, she too just moved to L.A. Her transition was a little less drastic than mine, since she moved from Vegas (hence the title). She is a working model with a focus in the area of commercial modeling.

We met at Griffith park around 10 am to get started; this is the first time that I've had a shoot this early, so I was interested to see how my creative process would function. I usually have my most creative epiphanies at night or during long drives. It was a fun time and we were able to capture some good images. As with most first shoots, things started off a little slow, until we got comfortable with each others work process. This shoot turned into a small hike and I have the war wounds to prove that I was there.

I've attached a few images for your viewing pleasure!
I have plans to shoot with her again in the near future, so keep an eye out for future collaborations.

Side Note:
We also learned about a game that I didn't know existed,,, GPS hunting, check out geo caching at http://www.geocaching.com/. One of the guys working at the park tracked a fake rock covered in pine needles. It contained all sorts of nick knacks, from kleenex to condoms (I made the condom part up) but it's interesting to learn about new the things we do to entertain ourselves.

P.s. it's 1:32 am and i'm sure this post is not cohesive but I promise to read and edit it again tomorrow.
